Legend of Basara Review
Reviewed by: Sophia Hwang
Legend of Basara is about a girl named Sarasa, who is the younger sister to the child of fate and was prophesied to overthrow the corrupt government that was in place. However, the Red King, the ruler of their area invades their village and kill her brother, Tatara. Afterwards, she pretend to be her brother and leads a movement against the Red King to gain revenge for the harm that had befallen her village, and ultimately overthrow the entire government ruling Japan. The art within the story is very unique and adds on to the entire reading experience. The characters are also very interesting and as you read, it is very easy to get invested into their lives and the plot that surrounds them. It is also very interesting to see how different they act depending on who they are with and what is going on. The plot of the story is contingent on Sarasa fulfilling her brother's duty as the child of fate and overthrowing the government.
One of the subplots within the story is the love that happens between Sarasa and the Red King, Shuri. They fall in love, but neither realizes the real identity of the other. The first major arc is about defeating the Red King, and at the final battle, both flee when they realize who the other person is. The next major arc consists of Sarasa fulfiling her duty as the leader of their rebellion and overthrowing the entire government and the two of them accepting their feelings for each other. The story ends with the defeat of Shuri's father, the emperor, and the rest of the rebellion announcing that their are dead to prevent them from having to kill each other. Once the story ends, their are many one shots about what happens afterwards, but none are directly about Sarasa or Shuri, but about their companions.
I personally really liked the character development and the twists and unexpected events within the story. All the events in themselves built up the climax and contributed to the ending without giving it away. If you are a fan of Game of Thrones or apocalyptic hero stories, Legend of Basara is a great manga to read, and there is also an anime adaptation.
